Né à Falaise vers 1027, fils d'un duc et d'une fille du peuple, Guillaume survit aux complots de son enfance grâce à la fidélité de ses proches. Devenu duc de Normandie, il fait de Caen sa ville : il y fonde l'Abbaye aux Hommes, Mathilde l'Abbaye aux Dames.
En 1066, il traverse la Manche. La victoire d'Hastings fait de lui le roi d'Angleterre — et change le cours de l'histoire européenne. Vingt ans plus tard, le Domesday Book recense son royaume : un acte administratif sans équivalent au Moyen Âge.
Il repose à Caen, dans l'abbaye qu'il a bâtie. En 2027, la Normandie célèbre son millénaire.
Born in Falaise around 1027, the son of a duke and a commoner's daughter, William survived the plots of his childhood thanks to the loyalty of those closest to him. As Duke of Normandy, he made Caen his city, founding the Abbaye aux Hommes while Mathilda founded the Abbaye aux Dames.
In 1066 he crossed the Channel. Victory at Hastings made him King of England — and changed the course of European history. Twenty years later, the Domesday Book surveyed his realm: an administrative feat without equal in the Middle Ages.
He rests in Caen, in the abbey he built. In 2027, Normandy celebrates his millennium.
