Né à Saint-Malo en 1773, Robert Surcouf embarque dès l'adolescence et découvre en mer sa vraie nature : audacieux, indocile, insaisissable. À peine vingt ans, il commande déjà ses premiers navires corsaires et sillonne l'océan Indien sous pavillon français.
En 1800, au large de Sumatra, il s'empare du Kent, un vaisseau anglais trois fois plus armé que le sien — l'exploit qui fait sa légende. Jamais pris, jamais soumis, il devient l'un des corsaires les plus redoutés et les plus riches de son temps. Napoléon l'anoblit ; la France entière connaît son nom.
Il s'éteint à Saint-Malo le 8 juillet 1827, dans la ville qui l'a vu naître. En 2027, deux cents ans jour pour jour après sa mort, Saint-Malo célèbre son bicentenaire.
Born in Saint-Malo in 1773, Robert Surcouf went to sea as a teenager and found his true nature there: bold, untamed, impossible to catch. Barely twenty, he was already commanding his first privateer ships across the Indian Ocean under the French flag.
In 1800, off the coast of Sumatra, he seized the Kent, a British vessel three times more heavily armed than his own — the feat that made him a legend. Never captured, never subdued, he became one of the most feared and wealthiest privateers of his era. Napoleon ennobled him; his name became known across France.
He died in Saint-Malo on 8 July 1827, in the city where he was born. In 2027, two hundred years to the day after his death, Saint-Malo celebrates his bicentenary.
